Here are two long-form sets from Octane Coffee in Atlanta 2007. More information below:

By that time, we knew the place quite well and got to the decoration with glow in the dark garden pebblesAtlhack had meetings there. Much thanks to Tony from Octane and Gavin for giving me an opportunity to play! Both performances used ChucK exclusively.

The first gig was on May 29th, 2007. Since it was a long set, I ended up using both newly improvised material as well as stubs that I had recently developed for the Atlanta Laptop Battle series that year. As well, you’ll hear “Sample Forest” sections that I pulled out with the sample-based composition tool I was developing (Mused). Here is the recent edit–I removed some of the many glitches:

Here is a more slightly more digestible excerpt from Octane 1, named Triple Chorus:

The second gig was on August 8, 2007. I remember having made a change in my setup that allowed changing the tempo in mid-stream, but there was a code error, leading to the out-of-phase tempos you’ll hear below. The set is also book-ended by a real-time WiiMote instrument and a sample from the Ravel Piano trio. Besides the clean synthesis, I also miked the room to get in some of the ambiance of the place. Enjoy!

at Placard Sheffield 2011

Ok, so I recently performed at Sheffield Placard 2011, a headphone festival hosted by Alex McLean and the excellent folks at Access Space, an open technology center unique on its own merits. Over the past few years, he has hosted several such, being inspired by the original le Placard festivals which originated in Paris. The atmosphere, the participation, and people were great, and I hope they will continue to host them in the future (special thanks to Alex for making it all happen!).

Alex kicked off the festival around noon with some binaural films. For me, some of the most memorable performances were:

For my contribution, I gave a simple livecoding set using Supercollider, starting from this stub file with a simplified version of the Promenade from Pictures at an exhibition (which I used in other recent projects). As a backdrop I used a recent Barcelona field recording I did as part of the Hertziosfera-Sounds of Gracia workshop, which focused on field recording of everyday soundscapes.

I think it turned out alright, though the recording is a bit clipped. The most interesting parts are the last 5-10 minutes. Enjoy:
