Short Variations on Ravel

For a while now I have wanted to create a livecoding composition by varying the phrases below:

Page 4 of the Ravel String quartet, the modal theme

Recently I implemented this idea–for a DVD call in the livecoding community. Using Supercollider, I realized the original score in code, and was able to make some basic variations on it. Subtitles attempt to explain what is going on to the listener. You can watch the variations below:

You can listen to the original excerpt on Youtube from American String Quartet.

In the course of developing the piece, I made some shortcut/extensions to the Pattern class, which can be found here: gkcPatternExt.sc.

PS In my search for the excerpt, I found out that I’m not the only one recently stealing from this quartet. Andrew Bird on Ravel riffs on the pizzicato-heavy second movement.

Update: This piece has been accepted and published in the livecoding-focused DVD accompanying the Winter 2011 Computer Music Journal (Volume 35, Issue 4). The program notes were available at the time of this update. Links to some are posted on this TOPLAP wiki page.
